So many of us focus our self-worth on attaining certain milestones or objectives and holding onto reaching those goals as measures of success. I know I did. However, as I look back on what allowed me to attain each of these successes, I noticed there was something much deeper at play that really allowed me to be successful.
We, as a society, measure success wrong. For each of the KPI or scoreboard goals we have, there are a variety of factors that need to be accomplished to meet that goal. There are strategies, plans, programs and processes that need to be created and executed.
The truth is, though, that there is something special that must happen for truly successful (in the John Wooden definition of success). There are specific character and psychological traits that people have that enable them to practice the Four Fundamental Forces of Leadership more effectively, which allows them to execute processes more impactfully. That means the programs deliver more relvance, which drives the strategies to greater heights. Those high-flying strategies bring forth the scoreboard goal.
Those foundational traits and actions are where success lays. Do well at those foundations and you will reach what you are looking for. However, the better you are at with the foundations, the more flexible you will be in how you lead in other areas, for these skills are easily transferable.
