Recently, I picked up some furniture I bought at the company's warehouse. My experience with the people on the show floor was quite good. However, when I got to the warehouse dock, my experience changed.
There were three younger men working the dock that afternoon. None of them were mean or disrespectful to me in any way. However, they didn't really talk with me other than when they needed to direct me in some way. Most importantly, it didn't look like they enjoyed their job too much.
Several years ago, I was in New York on business and came into JFK. As I was standing in the taxi line with a coworker, I noticed the man that helps direct people to their taxi. This gentleman, at least in his 50's, was chatting up everyone in line and having a great time. I don't know whether he was at the start or end of his shift; all I know is that he was enjoying what would be considered by most as a boring and mindless job. How does he do it?
Attitude. Fun and Joy
His energy and positivity filled him and spread to those people that had sat on a plane for hours and were 'looking forward to' a long cab ride.
I often think of that man and how he found joy in his job. I'm sure he'd be joyful in any job. I wish I had a chance to know him.
